Use the Fence Paint Calculators given below to estimate fence area from five familiar shapes.
Fence Paint Calculator
Calculation Steps
This fence paint calculator estimates the surface area to be painted across different fence layouts, including flat fences, picket fences, double-sided fences, sloped fences, and panel-based fences. Formulas are provided below.
Flat Fence
The paintable area of a flat fence is A = length × height, where both are measured along the fence line. For a fence 60 ft long and 6 ft high, the calculator gives A = 60 × 6 = 360 ft².
Picket Fence
For a picket fence, area is A = number of pickets × picket width × height. If there are 100 pickets each 4 inches (0.33 ft) wide and 3.5 ft high, the calculator returns A = 100 × 0.33 × 3.5 ≈ 115.5 ft².
Double-Sided Fence
If painting both sides, total area is A = 2 × (length × height). For a 40 ft fence that’s 5 ft tall, the calculator gives A = 2 × 40 × 5 = 400 ft².
Sloped Fence
The area of a sloped fence is A = length × average height. For a 50 ft long fence rising from 4 ft to 6 ft, average height = (4 + 6) / 2 = 5 ft, so A = 50 × 5 = 250 ft² using the calculator.
Panel-Based Fence
For panel-based fences, area is A = number of panels × panel width × panel height. If using 10 panels each 6 ft wide and 6 ft tall, the calculator gives A = 10 × 6 × 6 = 360 ft².
Weekend DIY tip: Each of our 6 × 8 ft fence panels was straightforward, but the curved gate was tricky. The fence paint calculator helped with the basics, and for the rounded sections, I checked sector area using the area calculator. Total coverage ended up much closer than my original guess.
