Types of Construction Sand

Construction sand is classified by grain size and mineralogy: concrete sand (0 – 4 mm), masonry sand (0 – 2 mm), fill sand, screened river sand, and manufactured stone dust. These categories influence workability, strength, and drainage. Sand’s angularity, gradation, and cleanliness affect concrete finish, mortar cohesion, and playground safety. Sourcing and Quality Control

Sand is quarried from riverbanks, dredged from seabeds, or produced by crushing rock. Quality tests include particle-size analysis, silt content (< 8 %), and organic impurity checks. Moisture content—often 2 %-5 %—impacts weight-to-volume conversions during purchase.
